Hello 👋 I'm Matthew Sessions, the creator of Retention. My journey with languages began in my early 20s while living, studying, and working in Asia. During those years, I had the opportunity to learn a few languages, an experience that not only enriched my life but also sparked a deep passion for language acquisition.
However, as I entered my late 20s, I noticed my fluency in these languages starting to fade. This realization was the catalyst for creating Retention, a language learning platform designed to help maintain and enhance language skills over time.
When I was actively studying languages, I often found myself thinking of ways to make the learning process more effective through software. Unfortunately, I lacked the technical skills to bring those ideas to life at that time. Fast forward five years, and I am now a skilled software engineer, equipped with the expertise to develop sophisticated solutions. The advent of Generative AI has further empowered me to turn many of my early ideas into reality.
Retention is an AI-native language learning service tailored for intermediate to advanced learners. Our platform focuses on helping users retain and improve their language skills by providing a variety of engaging and effective tools.
Currently, Retention's core feature involves offering phrases for learners to translate, with AI evaluating the accuracy of these translations. This immediate feedback mechanism helps users correct mistakes and understand nuances in real-time. Additionally, Retention tracks the words and phrases that users struggle with, compiling them into personalized vocabulary lists for targeted practice.
My approach to building Retention is agile and user-centric. I believe in shipping features quickly and iteratively, so user feedback plays a crucial role in shaping the platform. As more language learners join Retention and share their experiences, I am committed to continuously enhancing the service with new features and improvements.
